The Key To A Successful Camping Season Is The Same

The Key To A Successful Camping Season Is The Same As The Boy Scout Motto: Be Prepared.

Camping season is a time for exploring the great outdoors connecting with family and friends and truly enjoying the natural world. Whether one is a first timer or an experienced camper there is always something new to learn and experience. While camping season used to be associated only with summer months there are many opportunities to enjoy camping throughout the year. The key to a successful camping season is the same as the Boy Scout motto: Be prepared.

There are as many ways to camp as there are people who want to camp. For those who prefer a true backwoods adventure the combination of hiking and backpacking with their camping experience requires a different type of equipment and preparation than those who choose to drive to a state forest or private campground. Certain types of equipment are vital no matter what style of camping is preferred.

First even the most intrepid camper needs to sleep! A sturdy sleeping bag is most campers choice; sleeping bags are designed to accommodate different temperature requirements from lightweight bags for summer camping to below zero mummy bags for midwinter adventures. But a sleeping bag is not really enough for a good nights sleepthe ground is a hard mattress!

The wise outdoorsman will choose to put something between his back and the ground. In this as with sleeping bags there are a variety of options to choose from depending on the type of camping. The lightest weight and most portable choice is a simple foam camping pad which weighs less than a pound. For a backpacker this is a good choice. However someone who is using his car or truck as transportation may choose an air mattress or even a portable cot!

Cooking is another essential element for every type of camping. While the traditional image of cooking over an open fire may be considered part of the ultimate camping experience many factors make campfire cooking a less desirable option. Modern camping stoves are lightweight and offer more flexibility than a fire. A good camp stove can boil a quart of water in less than 4 minutes; yet it weighs less than 2 pounds!

Once the heat source is decided on cookware must be selected. Again choices are nearly limitless! The simplest choice is a stick for grilling hot dogs or marshmallows but this isnt a practical choice for a hungry camper. Outdoor cookware sets are nearly as extensive as those a gourmet chef uses. One of the lightest choices is a set which features multipurpose components made of sturdy stainless steel ideal for a hiking trip. Other styles of cookware include cast iron dutch ovens grills bake ware and even woks.

Beyond the necessities and preparation for camping the underlying joy of camping season is the same for all campers. Camping season whether it is a New England summer a southwestern fall or an Alaskan winter gives people an escape from their daily lives. It represents a connection with the natural world that is usually lost in worlds of skyscrapers highways and mundane responsibilities. The rat race is suspended on a camping trip replaced by long walks canoe rides relaxing around a campfire or a myriad of other activities.

Everyone finds something special about camping. People of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to refresh and recharge themselves; it doesnt matter if one hikes the back country or drives an RV into campground. By choosing to visit where they must adopt new behaviors and conform to different rules campers create a new world for themselves each trip. For them camping season is never ending.

Choosing Hiking Trails – Important Things To Consider

Choosing Hiking Trails – Important Things To Consider

Do you plan to go on a hiking adventure? A hiking adventure can last a few hours or more or even for the whole weekend. But no matter how long your hiking trip may be you will need to choose where to hike. And when you do choose a hiking trail be assured that you have many options. Anywhere in the United States there are hiking trails where you can go to and some of them might just be a short distance away from your home.

In view of so many hiking trails which you may choose from it goes without saying that your concern might be on how you can choose the ideal hiking trail for your planned hiking adventure. To be sure there are lots of factors that you may find worth considering when choosing a hiking trail. Let us briefly discuss these factors for you.

One of the factors which you need to consider when you choose a hiking trail is the level of difficulty there is in a particular hiking trail. As you probably know the design format or terrain of hiking trails differ. There are even nature parks that boast of several hiking trails within them. This simply means that you have lots of hiking trails to choose from. So instead of looking at the scenery and aesthetic value of a hiking trail you can choose the one with a difficulty level that matches your own confidence level. For example you can try a hiking trail that is intended or designed for beginners if you happen to be a firsttime hiker.

Along with the difficulty level consideration for your safety is important and should be a key factor when you choose a hiking trail. You just cannot leave your safety to chance. Check the maintenance conditions of hiking trails you wish to choose from. If it is not possible to see for yourself the condition of a hiking trail you may try asking around from friends or acquaintances who may have had experiences with it. Another way of getting the information you need is browsing the internet. Look for online discussion boards or websites from which you can gather pertinent information. Then proceed to select the one that you think is safe enough for you to hike.

Related to safety considerations is security. Again check if security measures including security personnel are well in place when you choose a hiking trail. Let not your anticipated excitement obscure the possibility that you might not be familiar with the hiking park or trail you are going to choose. Security personnel around hiking parks can readily help you in case something untoward happens like accidents or encounters with strangers whose disposition towards you may be suspect.

If you plan to go hiking that may last the whole weekend or even more than that you may also be thinking of a camping adventure. Camping happens a lot of times for hikers. In this case you would do well to choose a hiking trail with overnight accommodations. Often this kind of accommodations goes with onsite campgrounds. There would be other things to consider like gearing up properly and bringing along with you enough food provisions. But if you are inclined to hike only for the day plans for overnight accommodations may not be that important to consider when you choose a hiking trail.

Another important factor is price. Hiking parks or trails in the US charge admission fees for hikers so that they can get access to them. The rates vary from one hiking trail to the other. They would usually depend on facilities and services they offer. Although these charges are reasonable enough and highly affordable by American standards you have much to gain and nothing to lose if you take into account the varying charge rates especially if you want to save money.

What we discussed are just some of many other factors which you may do well to consider when you choose your hiking trail. They are meant to guide you as you plan for and go on a hiking adventure. They can help make your adventure enjoyable and memorable.

Pai In The Sky

Pai In The Sky

The small town of Pai is not like any other town you may visit in Thailand. It has developed a unique and distinct character of its own which is based on atmosphere rather than any special attractions. It has a remote location not far from one of Thailand’s most northern towns Mae Hong Song and next to the huge wilderness of the offlimits Shan State in Burma.

The town itself is situated in a mostly dry and flat area that looks similar to many other rural farming areas in this part of Thailand. Getting here is part of the fun as the narrow road winds over the top of some beautiful mountains. The forests are lush and dense the temperature is cool and the vistas are truly breathtaking. Arriving in Pai makes you feel as though you have escaped the real world.

Pai attracts many different types of people from new age travellers through to those looking for some peace and relaxation. It’s a far cry from the pollution and noise of Bangkok or the upmarket hotels and commercialism of Phuket. There are none of the expensive and lavish resorts found elsewhere in Thailand.

The riverside bungalows here are the perfect place to stay and provide you with everything you need. The basic facilities and laidback service are all part of the appeal and the lack of development in the town has helped retain the chilled out reputation it has.

But don’t be fooled in to thinking that there isn’t anything to do in Pai. There is a good choice of activities offered by numerous agents in the town including enduro motorcycle excursions whitewater rafting and trekking. If you don’t want to be part of an organised group then you can do your own thing by visiting Pai Canyon or by making a trip to the waterfall in the northwest of the town.

Another popular option is to rent a motorbike and cruise along some of the roads in the valley. The more adventurous might want to try some of the challenging offroad trails nearby. If however you just want to relax then you won’t be disappointed either. It’s also worth taking the time to call in at the small elephant camp located a short distance from the town and at the hot springs which are a great place to head to on a chilly winter morning.

Pai has a steady flow of visitors during the dry winter months when the weather is at its best. During the monsoon rains tourist numbers drop and its usually the backpackers that keep businesses ticking over. The town also has a small group of expats that have escaped their stressfilled lives in their native countries for something completely different. They somehow manage to get by with the odd bit of work and are happy to blend in with the local lifestyle.

Pai isn’t a place solely for foreigners as the Thais also are regular visitors. University students in particular enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and bohemian atmosphere and they also benefit from the cheap lodgings and restaurants. Regular tour buses on their way to Mae Hong Song often call in for a brief stop.

If you have a limited amount of time and it’s your first visit to the area then it’s a great way to experience this part of Northern Thailand. There is an established ‘loop’ that takes you to Pai Mae Hong Song and returns to Chiang Mai via the southern approach and the impressive Doi Inthanon National Park.

There has been a steady rise in visitor numbers in Pai over the last several years mainly due to its presence in various guide books and its establishment on the backpacker trail. The local people have benefited in many ways as they continue to build restaurants bars guesthouses and set up tour agencies. Fortunately none of the international hotel groups have bought land or property in the area so it retains a small town feel.

However the old grass airport nearby has recently been paved so it seems unlikely that Pai will retain its special appeal forever. If you’re planning a visit in the near future then you will surely enjoy the relaxed and laid back pace of life beautiful scenery trafficfree roads and the wide choice of great bars and restaurants.

Hotels And Accomodation In Galicia

Hotels And Accomodation In Galicia

An exceptional variety of visitor accommodation can be found in northern Spain and Galicia Accommodation can be found that will fit all forms of budgets and even the most particular tourists will find something to suit their particular needs.

If you want something slightly different then most people would head for one of the various exclusive hotels throughout the region or one of the Paradors that can be found in various key places throughout the area. Throughout the region there are various mountain refuges with stunning views as well as campsites in the coastal areas.

As expected the hotels in Galicia and Northern Spain are extremely spacious very clean and comfortable. The categorisation for the hotels is awarded on a star system and these are allocated by the regional tourist authorities. If you need actual visible proof of the standard of your hotel you can find confirmation indicated by a small blue plaque near the hotel front door.

Hotels usually have ensuite bathrooms or at least a shower in the room. You may well be surprised but it is unlikely that these sorts of facilities would be found in the smaller hostels and Pensiones.

Don’t equate the number of stars on the outside door of the hotel to necessarily match the standards of the accommodation that is on offer and this is because in Spain the stars are allocated on the facilities on offer not necessarily the quality of the service. As is usual in most quality hotels the standard facilities on offer include air conditioning televisions in each room facilities for the disabled Internet access and onsite parking.

The cost of accommodation as in most cases varies from season to season therefore it is wise to plan in advance. A popular option available in all of the autonomous regions of northern Spain are hostels hostales and guest houses pensiones which are cheaper than hotels. These are usually small familyrun establishments offering just a few beds.

There are in excess of 1500 hotels with a total of 92000 beds registered in the territory of Green Spain the Atlantic regions of Galicia Asturias Cantabria and the Basque country.

The largest hotel chains in the area are called Grupo SolMelia and NH. The quality of these hotels is extremely good. Latterly there have been a growing number of smaller privately run hotels that offer memorable relaxing accommodation available.

In Spain they have dotted throughout the country a series of state run hotels that are known as Paradors. These have classifications of anything between three to five stars in accommodation standard. There is now quite a wide network of Paradors throughout the country the first one opened in 1928. The theory behind them was that they should never be more than a day’s drive from one to another. In Santiago de Compostela you can find possibly the best known Parador in the area and this is the Parador de los Reyes Catolicos. Various monasteries castles and other monuments have been used for Paradors elsewhere. Some Parador’s have been purpose built often in spectacular scenery or in towns of historic interest.

The local Parador might not be best hotel in town but it will usually deliver a predictably consistent standard of comfort. The bedrooms are usually spacious and comfortable and all furnished to a standard that varies little from Parador to Parador. Quite often you will find that they offer outstanding samples of regional cuisine. It is usually wise to plan ahead and book your accommodation if you wish to use the network of Paradors. Bookings can be made either using the Central de Reservas which is a centrally based service based in Madrid or you can contact each Parador direct. Rates can be expensive it is worth looking for special deals especially in the high season but to be brutally honest this has to be the same anywhere you go.

Shimla Honeymoon Package In India

Shimla Honeymoon Package In India

One of the most complex decisions newlyweds have to make is where to spend their honeymoon probably one of the most significant vacations a couple will take. Finding romantic secluded honeymoon destination can be challenging.

If you are nature lover and want to spend your holidays in North India Himachal Pradesh part of Himalayan range will be of course perfect honeymoon destination. Himachal is a veritable mosaic of landscapes and environment.

Down the decades Shimla has been high on the list of India’s honeymoon destinations. Whether this was the result of images culled out of its past with all the aura of colonial privilege or reams that have rolled out of Bollywood right from the time of the hit movie Love in Shimla or the simple fact that this remains one of the most accessible of ‘hill stations’ and one with well developed facilities Shimla has what it takes to attract a couple on a honeymoon. There are various Travel agents in Delhi and Travel Agencies in Gurgaon that offer turnkey Shimla honeymoon packages.

A Victorian Summer : The town of Shimla rose in the wake of the Gurkha wars when the victorious British decided to retain certain pockets as military outposts and sanitaria. Within a couple of decades it had become the summer focus for the British stationed in India. Shimla was the hill station for the elite all the minions of the Raj kept at bay from the inner circle began bestowing the town with sobriquets such as Mount Olympus and Home of the Little Tin Gods.

Strolling in Shimla : The most spectacular of the buildings that rose in the wake of the British Empire’s jump to the hills was the former Viceregal Lodge that now houses the Indian Institute of Advance Study. It is the far side of the Lodge’s estate that is rarely seen. Covered with oak and rhododendron trees through which slim firm lined paths slither and offer glimpses of the snowclad mountains.

There is the stump of a tree in the courtyard on which many prospective suitors and lovers tie red threads and wish what they will. On one side is Shimla itself and on the other you can see the flattened hilltop of the airfield and a display of narrow valleys and gorges.

Taking the toy train from Shimla to the suburb of Tara Devi and the temple there can make for a pleasant day trip. The woods are again a mixture of oak and rhododendron interspersed with some cedar trees.

Jakoo hill is the stronghold of Shimla mascot; the rhesus monkey and the summit viewsespecially at sunrise and sunset. Another one of Shimla little secrets is the village of Bihargaon that lies deep down its southern slopes.

Beyond the Mall Road : Past Shimla lies the suburb of Mashorba. While the village itself has precious little on offer apart from the view there are several places of considerable beauty that lie close to it. Natural plateau covered with magnificent centuries old cedar trees criss crossed by narrow brooks. An edge holds a beautiful wood and grey slate temple on this idyllic spot.

Mashorba normally comes with Carignano and the golf course at Naldehra thrown in. But if you are looking for something a little less commonplace then head up to the President’s Retreat or drive along the Bekhalty Road.

With golf high on the agenda for many visitors. Naldehra and the recently introduced Learn Golf Packages are good suburban attraction. The layout of the course was suggested by Lord Curzon would abandon the resplendent Viceregal Lodge in town and camp in the cedar woods of Naldehra for weeks on end communicating with his office by heliograph . His youngest daughter Alexandra was regarded as being conceived at the glade he loved so much and was given naldera as her middle name.

At the end you really need is each other and decent walking shoes for the unexplored side of Shimla holds more than the beaten furrow. All this may not have very much to do when you encounter one of the towns famous cabbies whose aim is to fully fleece you up. And what better than a couple on their honeymoon as people who can be easily fully fleeced up.
